Songs from the Tin Shed (review)

Jeff Austin and Chris Castino (three and a half stars)
Songs From the Tin Shed [Frog Pad Records, March 2004]
Borrowing from the acoustic prowess of Austin’s Yonder Mountain String
Band and the hook-laden songwriting of Castino’s mildly psychedelic
outfit, the Big Wu, Tin Shed is a straightforward and
poignant study in nostalgia. While the mandolin/guitar duo benefits
from
an all-star list of guest musicians, including Hot Rize’s Nick Forster
and fiddle impresario Darol Anger, the record’s appeal comes lies in
its
catchy, Americana-tinged songwriting. Tracks like “Latent Love” and
“My
Baby’s Gone” posess the melancholy, lilting feel of venerable cowboy
ballads, and an emotive cover of Ranger Doug’s “Lonely Yukon Stars”
pays
homage to the genre. Drop a few awkwardly-placed uptempo numbers, and
this wistful collaborative release is nearly seamless. Brian
