Why does the Big Wu always play 21+ shows in my area?
The Big Wu has always wanted to play all-ages venues so that everyone is able to get in. However, there are many factors that go into booking all-ages shows.
The first time a band plays in any given town, they really only get a chance to play in the smallest of venues because none of the promoters, venue owners, and in-house booking agents know the band. These small venues are almost always bars, which are almost always 21+ only establishments by law. When a band returns to that town, they are no longer a stranger, but their ability to play in larger all-ages venues is directly related to the attendance at the last show, the sound-scan ratings for their album sales in that area, and the amount of radio play the band gets on local radio stations. Since most bands in this genre get very little radio play, and have weak studio album sales (due to the scene's desire to hear live recordings) we must rely strictly on the attendance at our shows.
Lately, the economy has played a big role in show attendance, and numbers have been down for almost every band in every genre all over the country this year. What this means is playing smaller venues, and, unfortunately, 21+ shows.
We are doing our best to try to play larger all-ages venues. But, we could really use our help to make it happen. The more people that show up to our shows on tour, the bigger and better venues we'll be able to play in the future! So, thanks for coming on tour with us and supporting the Big Wu!
